Ingersoll Rand cordless impact tools feature best-in-class durability and are designed for outstanding performance and reliability. With a little common-sense preventive maintenance, you’ll enjoy many years of trouble-free operation. Here’s some simple ways you can keep your cordless impact tool working properly:
Tool Tip: Caring for your Cordless Impact Tool
1. Use Your Tool Correctly
The best way to keep a tool working properly is to use it properly. Many tools get damaged when they are used incorrectly or are asked to do too much. If your tool lacks the power or torque for the job at hand, upgrade to the correct tool. Ingersoll Rand has the right tool for every possible job ready for you right now.
Similarly, Use the correct attachments for your tool such as impact-rated accessories to prevent damage. Find impact tool attachments and accessories here.
2. Clean After Each Use
Wipe down your tool with a clean towel or rag to remove grease, oil, dust, dirt, and debris. Take care to keep dirt, debris, and metal filings away from the vents in the housing. Do not use harsh, abrasive cleaners as they may scratch the tool’s housing and dull its appearance.
If necessary, you can use compressed air or a brush to clean hard-to-reach vents, triggers, and the square drive, but use caution not to blow dirt inside the vents.
Keep fuels and solvents like acetone or thinner away from your tool. Wipe them away quickly if they do accidentally come into contact. For safety, keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean, and free of oil and grease.
3. Lubricate the Right Amount
A small amount of lubricant to moving parts will prevent rust and friction, but an excessive buildup of grease will result in sluggish operation. The type and frequency of lubrication depends upon the tool. Some tools should be lubricated daily. The innovative 2236QTIMAX includes the patented 2236 Direct Greasing System, the first of its kind in the industry. The W7153 IQV20™ DXS® 1/2″ Cordless Impact Wrench leverages a Direct Greasing System as well and is the only cordless tool with direct mechanism lubrication, which helps extend the tool’s life.

4. Inspect Your Tool for Damage
When you’re using or cleaning your tool, always be on the lookout for damage. Check for cracks and worn parts. Vibration can loosen fasteners over time, so periodically check and tighten them.
Replace any damaged components immediately. Keep all vents clear so the tool does not overheat.
Make sure your attachments are in good condition, and that cutting attachments are sharp. Need replacement attachments? Click here.
Do not use your tool if the switch does not turn it on or off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled by the switch is dangerous and must be repaired before use.
You can find parts for your tool or service options to repair damage here.
5. Take Care of Your Battery and Charger
Use the battery and charger that is designed for your tool. Many tools, batteries, and chargers are not interchangeable and may cause damage or even a fire if used incorrectly. Need a battery or charger? Ingersoll Rand offers a variety of batteries and chargers for all our tools. Our IQV20™ batteries are compatible with all IQV20™ series tools and deliver a significant increase in run time, allowing you to work longer and recharge less frequently.
Keep your battery away from metal objects like nails, paper clips, screws etc. that can short the connections and potentially cause a fire. Do not expose the battery to excessive temperatures that could occur if left in a vehicle in the hot sun.
Disconnect the battery from your tool before storing it in a toolbox or bag. If the tool accidentally starts running, it can overheat causing damage or a fire.
Do not leave the battery for a long time at low charge. Keep your batteries charged and ready to use. The battery will hold the charge for a considerable amount.
That said, lithium-ion batteries last longer with regular use. If you don’t use the tool for a long time, charge the batteries periodically. An hour back in the charger will effectively top off the charge, so you’re ready to work.

6. Store the Tool, Battery, and Charger Correctly
When not in use, keep your tool in your toolbox or on a shelf in a clean, dry, secure place. Avoid exposure to moisture or extreme temperatures. Keep your batteries and chargers cool and dry and away from metal pieces like nails or screws that could potentially cause a short.
